Alexkid - 'Caracol' LP (FComm)
12th May 2007
Alexkid 'Caracol'
F-Communications
Alexkid releaseed his third studio album 'Caracol' via F-communications on April 30th.
Alexkid, born in Paris and raised in the Balearic Islands, spent his childhood divided between the beach and his aunt's record shop - listening to anything from Stevie wonder to StiX to LiPPS Inc. He returned to Paris in the 80s and as a teenager began playing the guitar; joining several punk or funk groups whilst also organising concerts for himse f and his friends. He went to his first rave 'Mozinor' (infamous French rave) in 1992 - "The first time I went there I had no clue, but Joey Beltram was maybe going to play. It was huge, over 2000 people; from punks to
models to My English teacher, which was a bit of a surprise" - from here bought his first computer and started making music.
Alexkid released his first EP 'The Playground EP' on F-COM, ten years ago, in 1997, after handing his first production effort to Laurent Garnier - a drum and bass track on cassette... "I used to go every Thursday to Laurent's 'wake up' parties at The Rex - being fed as much Richie Hawtin as Ron Trent or Roni size - and one time gave him a tape of a track that I didn't know what to think of, I thought that maybe something could be better but he just loved it and signed it."
He then also started to DJ and, between 97 and 2001, he released four EPS, with his debut longplayer released in July 2001 - 'Bienvenida' (welcome in Spanish). 'Bienvenida' is a deep, downbeat electronica album with sometime Drum and Bass, sometime Jazz and sometime abstract HipHop elements; featuring li.ve musicians, a reconstruction Of Alex's 'I Think' by Richard Dorfmeister and the impressive poetry-vocal talents of Ursula Rucker on 'Fear in Flight' and Hanifah walidah on Not Every Angel'.
In 2003, Alex kid released his second longplayer, an exploration into finding common ground between the song and the dancefloor. The album became a big success, especially with tracks including 'Don't Hide It', from which Alex's 'Acid vocal mix' was used on Andrew weatherall's Fabric Live mix and which also included a rework by Josh wink on the vinyl package, and 'Come with me'. "'Come with me' from the second album became huge which had both a positive and negative effect - people were expecting me to play more commercial stuff in the clubs which I don't. I'm all about experiments, trying things; 'Come with me' was my idea of what pop music should be and not what I am as a DJ."
Extracts from both albums ('I think' from 'Bienvenida' and 'Come with me' from 'Mint') were used in the credits of Cult American series 'Six Feet under' and he was also asked to produce the original music for Jennifer Lopez's 'Glow' perfume campaign.
Into 2007 and ten years after his first ever release, Alexkid releases his third long-player 'Caracol'. 'Caracol' (meaning 'snail' in Spanish), is an electronic album aimed directly at the dancefloor: "with 'Caracol', I wanted to do an album that was more adaptive to the music I play nowadays... I got fed up mixing with real musicians with electronics; it was interesting.when no one was doing it, but now it's not for me. This album is more raw and electronic; something more physical; more for the clubs."
Alexkid also produces bands Dubphonic (currently working on second album) and Veo Veo (just completed first album) and has remixed for labels including K7, Dessous and Brique Rouge. He currently holds a bi-monthly residency at Weekend in Berlin and DJs regularly around Europe, Brasil, South Africa and Australia. Alongside Chloe and Tim Paris he also holds special 'Ghetto Blaster' nights in London, Berlin and Paris.
We love his experimanetal approach to dance music. Alex is fast becoming a legendary producer and this LP takes in the deepness, electro, acid house, dub, Detroit techno, chill out and aural hypnosis . Highlights include the tech filth of 'Nightshade', the stripped back 'Basic', the hypnotic 'Orm', the pulsing 'Love Letters', the Robert Hood sounding 'Caracol', the up for it 'Mare Alta' and the ambient 'Back and Forth'.
Also check the single 'Love Letters' including remixes from marC Romboy and Tim Paris that was released April 16th.
