'The stunning melodies and harmonies are the common thread' Straight No Chaser
'Ace beats, sharp production and wicked vocals, Brotherly are up there with the likes of Bugs In the Attic, Afronaught and IG Culture's New Sector Movements - 2007 just got one of the biggest dance LP's of the year'!' Paul Thornton itch / Preston FM
On 14th May 2007, Brotherly proudly present 'One Sweet Life, a high-tech, modern concoction of soul, jazz and off-kilter broken beats, with electronics and a bit of Brazil thrown in for good measure. Counting the Unabombers, the local itch lads and Gilles Peterson as fans, 'One Sweet Life' features acclaimed guests Ty, Earl Zinger, Eska and rising star Natalie Williams.
Comprising the core duo are producer/multi-instrumentalist Robin Mullarkey (Zero 7) and co-writer/ vocalist Anna Stubbs. 'One Sweet Life' is a lovingly crafted, coherent body of crystal clear production with top-notch, non-indulgent musicianship. Robin states: "You won't find ropey repetitive tracks knocked up on a rainy afternoon with an MPC and a throw-away vocal." Fans of Jazzanova, Earth Wind and Fire, Recloose or Donald Byrd will undoubtedly Tiffid much to love.
The album opens with the 6/4 fusion-boogie of 'System'. Described by Robin as "George Duke meets Mahavishnu Orchestra (having bumped into Patrice Rushen in the launderefte)", the track features a breathtaking solo from Bansuri aka Finn Peters on flute.
'Raindown' plays heavily on the African 12/8 rhythmic duality. With Panacea's Volker Strater on djembe and conga, the song builds up to a beats versus gospel-choir rain storm. The track caught the attention of Gilles Peterson and led to Brotherly recording a session at Maida Vale studios for Radio One in 2006. This was later nominated for'session of the year' on Gilles'awards show.
Voted single of the fortnight in Blues and Soul magazine and an anthem at broken beat/future jazz club Co-Op, 'Put It Out' matches Mark De Clive Lowe's 'Tides Arising', both in intensity and tightly-wound funk. The track features the vocal talents of South London Zimbabwean Eska Mtungwazi - well respected in certain circles and tipped for wider acclaim when her debut album finally drops. The track was originally released as a single on Bugz In The Attic's own Bitasweet label in '05, to worldwide underground acclaim. 'Put It Out' is made for clubs and about clubs, in particular certain guys in clubs that misunderstand and are misunderstood.
Featuring the verging-on-ludicrous lyrics of Galliano and Gilles Peterson MC Rob Gallagher aka Earl Zinger, 'Elevate' is a gospel-hip hop track reminiscent of Staple Singers walking down Sesame Street whilst promoting peace and love. The album closes with the title track'One Sweet Life', summarising the album's theme that life is not a rehearsal. Guest artist Ty gets philosophical and dark on this slice of Platinum Pied Piper-style, disjointed hip hop. A weighty bass drum and electronic growls contrast with the trademark warm live instrumentation, before the track ends symbolically with a heartbeat-like kick.
With Robin hailing from Rochdale and Anna from Southend via California, the pair met at music college in Leeds and are now partners in both senses. Robin fell into a jazz degree (as you do), going to Uni where his friends went, and became involved in Leeds' thriving latin and jazz scene, often -playing 2 or 3 gigs per day. Pre-Brotherly, Anna's adult life comprised mainly of the nine-to-five, before having an epiphany, rising from the rat race and working hard to become the fully fledged singer she is today. Moving back to London, Anna formed drum-&-bass-with-strings outfit 'Ana' of which Robin was a member. They played a smattering of much-lauded gigs around the UK, before honing their concept and forming Brotherly. Between them, over the years theyve ingested and learnt from records by Steely Dan, The Roots, Elis Regina and Boards of Canada, to name but a few.
Currently, Robin plays bass for Zero7 and Ty, and the pair have been involved in records by Two Banks of Four, Roisin Murphy, Natalie Williams, Rima and IG Culture between them. In addition, Robin's recent industry activities including cowriting with soul maestros Bugz In The Attic and legendary producer Drew Horley, producing Zero7 singer Mozez, and recording a track with electro-blues fixture Ernesto, set to be released by Columbia Japan.
Brotherly headlined the Free Stage of the London Jazz Festival, which was widely acknowledged as a highlight, playing to a mammoth crowd at the Queen Elizabeth Hall plus, according to CMU Daily, at another gig, 'they absolutely mesmerised the crowd', so come and get some Brotherly love.
