Conscious Movement Drawing Workshop

About

Are you curious about the meeting place of mark-making and movement?

In this fun, creative workshop for adults, you will be guided to explore different sensations, and emotions that come up in your body, through movement and drawing. Whether you love to make art and dance, or you feel like you don’t have a creative bone in your body, this workshop welcomes you to come out to play.

You’ll be let loose on a large piece of paper that covers the floor, given charcoal and chalk to experiment with, and invited to explore how your inner impulses manifest into external movement in response to a series of rhythms. This automatic movement practice is designed to release the dancer that lives in every body, no matter what its shape, size, age, limitations and experience. Rather than having steps to follow, each rhythm is a different energy field in which you find your own expression and choreography, thereby stretching your imagination as well as your body.

Each participant will be invited to cut out a section of the final collaborative large scale drawing to take home in an A4 Frame provided. No prior experience is necessary, just come with an open mind and a willingness to express yourself. You will be encouraged to use your whole body and will be barefoot or in socks on the paper so you are advised to wear comfortable clothes that you are not precious about. Cleaning materials will be provided for your skin.

About the artist:

Chloé Julia Smith is a Manchester based queer visual artist and performer from London.

She explores a performative drawing practice that incorporates dance and sound as a form of holistic therapy. She sees life as energy in motion. It is those rhythms, and sensations that are at the centre of her work. She explores the use of mark making and its influence on the way a movement develops; however, she is also fascinated by how music and dance can manipulate the impulses to draw. Each line she draws is layered with a different intensity and history and remains as a record of the moment during which it was traced, turning the work into a writing of time.
