Sheffield 2012 guide

Whether you prefer to sip a quiet pint in a dusty pub or rave until the early hours, Sheffield’s nightlife can offer something for pretty much every taste. Both Uni and Hallam host different club nights most days of the week. These cater for a variety of musical tastes and budgets, such as Sheffield Student’s Union’s Tuesday Club which plays drum & bass, or Hallam’s Pounded, which is on a Monday and will cost you just (you guessed it) a pound to get in - with many drinks also available for a quid.

bars

Leaving the unis behind, Ecclesall Road is a student favourite. With a lot of Hallam’s accommodation close by, the street features a wide variety of bars and pubs. So whether you fancy a chilled drink with friends or a raucous night of debauchery, this is one of the best roads to do it on.

Heading into the centre of Sheffield, West Street is always busy with a host of bars like Walkabout and Varsity which are very student friendly and are close to most of the popular clubs. Just off West Street, on Carver Street, Crystal is a chic bar with a great student night on a Tuesday.

Also, there are loads of offensively cheap student offers and loyalty cards available from most places to make your budget stretch that little bit further.

clubs

On the club side, Embrace boasts five rooms and is placed right in the middle of town while The Leadmill caters to more of an indie taste, with live bands often gracing the Steel Stage and worryingly cheap drinks most nights. Plug is also a student favourite, with regular visits from the headphone disco and its Thursday special, Jump Around, is a regular for many students. Corporation offers a sticky but friendly venue for rock fans while the large O2 Academy accommodates big name bands as well as its own special club nights.

live music

If live music is more your thing, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Sheffield is home to a thriving music scene, with plenty of homegrown talent playing at venues around the city practically every night of the week.

Sheffield has an abundance of music venues - some large, some tiny - so whether you’re into stadium rockers or lesser known local talent, there will without doubt be a venue for you. The Leadmill is a good place to start as it caters for local unsigned acts, acting a centre to showcase new music as well as more established bands. The Boardwalk is a venue built on its impressive history. Despite its humble appearance, AC/DC the Sex Pistols and The Clash have all graced its stage in the past. It was also the inspiration for the name of Arctic Monkey’s early EP ‘Beneath the Boardwalk’, as they were regular performers. Plug also hosts gigs and a variety of DJs, while the O2 Academy is a step up in capacity and facilities meaning it is a venue rarely left out by successful artists on nationwide tours. Above that sits Sheffield Arena with a 12,500 capacity to cater for the most successful artists. At the other end of the scale there are plenty of bars and pubs such as West Street Live, The Harley and The Grapes which all aim to showcase local talent.

tramlines

Sheffield hosts a city wide music festival called Tramlines, which takes in 50 venues and three outdoor stages in the city centre. This year the event saw the likes of Mystery Jets, Toddla T, Simian Mobile Disco, Echo and the Bunnymen and many more perform over one weekend, and next year’s event will undoubtedly be equally impressive.
