Mondo Queero: Shortbus (2006)

From the director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus is a bold, sex-positive exploration of connection, intimacy, and loneliness in mid-2000s New York.

Centring on a "pre-orgasmic" sex therapist and the tangled lives around her, the film is famously explicit - but also unexpectedly tender, funny, and full of warmth.

Featuring a standout performance from Justin Vivian Bond, Shortbus blends an eclectic indie soundtrack with very mid-aughts fashion and a distinctly downtown NYC energy. It's as much a love letter to the city as it is a celebration of human vulnerability and desire.
