About

From “toxic masculinity” and “cancel culture” to the immense and unavoidable slew of corporate “woke” advertising, it would seem that masculinity hasn’t been such a popular subject of discussion since the Ancient Greeks’ obsession with virtue and virility. However, this public discussion is conspicuously one-sided. Many voices, particularly those that argue for “sexual difference” to be used in place of “gender identity” and for the appreciation of positive aspects of masculinity, are silenced before they can be heard. Nina Power is one such voice. Her latest book What Do Men Want? is a conversation-starter about the problems facing masculinity today. Power avoids the usual cliché of describing masculinity as “in crisis” but does recognise the spiralling male suicide rates and high-profile acts of violence against women, not to mention the “MGTOW” and “incel” communities, as proof of a serious problem in men’s and women’s ability to relate to each other. The book strikes a hopeful tone as it argues for a new-found return to eutrapelia, or “graceful playfulness”, in the games that men and women play together. Nina Power Nina Power is a cultural critic, social theorist, philosopher and translator. She is a senior lecturer in philosophy at Roehampton University and the author of One Dimensional Woman (2009) and What Do Men Want? (2022). Who can attend? All are welcome. Anyone interested in gender, identity and modern society is welcome to join what will be a constructive and inclusive discussion. This is a hybrid event. We have a limited number of seats available at the venue, but will be broadcasting internationally via Zoom. Online attendees will be welcome to pose questions and comments via the Zoom chat. We hope this will mean the event can be as inclusive and accessible as possible. A Zoom link is attached to online attendees' tickets and will also be sent out in reminder emails as the talk approaches. The talk will begin promptly at 7pm so we ask that those attending in person please arrive promptly.
