Mestre Hugo + Afon Sistema, Tainá, Pontes de Ritmo

Afon Sistema are overjoyed to be joined by Mestre Hugo - all the way from Recife, Brazil - for this special celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture! 

Representing the Carnival culture of Maracatu, Mestre Hugo is the musical director of Maracatu Nação Leão da Campina, one of the most well-known of all the Maracatu groups today. Growing up in the religious culture of "Candomblé Angola", as the son of a Mãe de Santo (Priestess), Hugo has been immersed in this culture since birth. 

Hugo is a passionate embassador for both Maracatu and Candomblé, and we love hosting him here with us! In fact, this will be the sixth time we've collaborated and all those who have seen him perform before know that the energy levels are UNREAL! At our last gig together, the security guard literally had to remove him from the stage as he really wanted to keep singing all night!

Backing Hugo on percussion will be various members of one of Bristol's best Carnival groups, Afon Sistema. Now in their 10th year, this award-winning group have long been performing at events such as St Paul's Carnival & Shambala Festival. Dedicated to truly representing the carnival culture of Brazil, these musicians travel to Recife each year to immerse themselves in the roots of this culture.

We'll also be joined on the night by two fantastic Brazilian DJ's; Tainá and Pontes de Ritmos (Aaee) who are also no strangers to dancefloors!

Tainá: Tainá hails from the sun-kissed shore of Ubatuba, Brazil, and now resides in Bristol, UK. Her intention is to unify dancefloors with the pure joy of being alive, lifting the spirits and illuminating peoples lives through music. 

With a musical focus on Afro-Brazilian and Latin rhythms including Samba & Bossa Nova, Afrobeats, Jazz, Funk and Baile Funk, Tainá invites you on a musical journey for your soul. Join her for a musical journal, giving you a well needed, soulful vitamin D boost with her sunshine infused selections.

Pontes de Ritmos: Meaning ‘Bridges of Rhythm’ in Brazilian Portuguese, Pontes de Ritmos is a project created by producer & DJ Aæe that aims to explore and showcase this intercontinental musical unity, and expand into new sounds and new spaces.
