A HOUSE STEEPED IN HISTORY Sudbrook House was built around 1725 by renowned architect, James Gibbs, for John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll. It is Grade 1 listed, and is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of eighteenth century English Palladian architecture. Campbell was a brilliant soldier and a particular favourite of George I, who rewarded him with a portion of Richmond Park adjacent to his existing estate in Petersham. James Gibbs also built St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square, perhaps the loveliest church in all of London. When Sudbrook House was first leased by The Richmond Golf Club in the late 1890s, it became one of the grandest clubhouses in all of golf. The jewel in the crown of Sudbrook House is the magnificent baroque Cube Room, which rises the height of the two main storeys. The beautiful trophies of arms carved above the doorways are believed to allude to the Duke of Argyll’s military achievements, and the Campbell family arms are carved in pine in the great panel above the mirror. The carved marble chimneypiece is most likely the work of the Flemish sculptor, John Michael Rysbrack.
