After a series of successful UK and European tours in Spring 2025 — including acclaimed performances at Café OTO (London), The Cube (Bristol), Stereo (Glasgow), and Les Ateliers Claus (Brussels), as well as festival appearances such as Braille Satellite (Lithuania) — Kulku return to the UK in 2026 for a new and highly anticipated tour.
Formed in Berlin 20 years ago, Kulku embodies an exhilarating Happening, a profound ceremony of raw music. Organic, driven, grounded yet floating. Kulku was founded by Johanna Riska and Andreas Riska alias Wenzlovar. The roots of their music grew out of influences from early minimal music (Moondog, Steve Reich), ritual music and art rock legends of the 60s. In the tradition of German Krautrock bands such as Can and Faust, the band is characterized by a sound whose raw material is made up of Orff instruments. With this special collection of instruments: metallophone, drums, orchestral timpani, xylophone, clarinet, saxophone, cello and an assortment of self-made instruments a universe of metaphysical stories is created. Stories about enlightened dogs or lost visionaries in the urban jungle full of light and shadows. An acoustic perpetuum- mobile that is fed by concentrated absorption. Exploring the sound spectrum of wood, metal and the human voice. Kulku calls their music No Age, a mix of unkitsch spirituality and the raw energy of punk/no wave.
Alongside live interpretations of material from their latest release Reset to Be released by Glasgow label Phase Group in 2024, Kulku will also be presenting new material from their forthcoming album, offering audiences an early glimpse into a body of work currently in development and set for release later this year. The tour continues the band’s commitment to expanding and refining their immersive, exploratory sound world, with each performance unfolding as a distinctive and evolving experience shaped by deep interplay and a shared drive to push their sonic language forward.
We are also thrilled to have The Universal Veil alongside Kulku on the bill. The Universal Veil is a duo comprised of Sam McLoughlin and David Chatton Barker. Their improvised live performances with their own handmade "ritual instruments" are by turns meditative, trancelike, joyous and surreal. Helios/Hind is a fascinating sonic artefact which unearths lo-fi cassette recordings from several years of past performances and weaves them together into a new whole, using an array of esoteric processes. It is possessed by the same spirit of mystery and discovery that is present at their live shows, where unusual sounds are spontaneously generated, recycled and transmuted into a deeply strange, magical and psychedelic soundscape which at times feels like it has a life of its own.
