Mother Courage 26 at Shakespeare’s Globe is a new production of Brecht’s anti-war masterpiece, Mother Courage and Her Children. This is the first time the Globe has brought Brecht to the stage, and the play follows Mother Courage as she drags her cart through a wasteland shaped by greed and conflict.
Set in a world where war has made resources scarce and hope a luxury, the story centres on a woman who makes a living from conflict while trying to keep herself and her children alive. The production is described as a modern staging of a classic protest piece, with live music, biting humour and raw determination.
Translated by Anna Jordan and directed by Globe Associate Artist Elle While, the production asks questions about survival, capitalism and complicity. It is presented as a darkly hedonistic take on a complex character, bringing the yard to life with fury, empathy and joy-as-rebellion.
Key facts: Shakespeare’s Globe’s first Brecht production, with live music. Translated by Anna Jordan and directed by Elle While.
