About

Join us for the Odyssey 2024 pre-festival programme, this time, we will bring you Hou Hsiao-Hsien's THE ASSASSIN (2015).

Following our success of the reappearance of LUST, CAUTION (2007) across the UK as part of Odyssey 2024's pre-festival programme, we are now introducing the 2nd film to continue our warm up.

Similar to LUST, CAUTION (2007), THE ASSASSIN (2015) is also a co-production by the region of Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong SAR. It is a demonstration of what Chinese-language cinema can achieve via the collaboration model.

Directed by Taiwan filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien, THE ASSASSIN (2015) is an award winning film from Cannes that was originally released in the UK by Studiocanal.

SYNOPSIS

During the ninth century, a general's young daughter is kidnapped and trained to become an exceptional assassin. When she doesn't execute a mission, she is ordered to kill her betrothed, forcing her to choose between love, family and the assassins.
The film is loosely based on the late seventh-century Tang dynasty martial arts story "Nie Yinniang" by Pei Xing in China, a core text in swordsmanship and wuxia fiction.

Odyssey 2024 will take place between 2-29 September offline across the UK and online, focusing on the theme of "food and travel".
