About Stranger Things: The First Shadow

Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre is set in Hawkins, 1959, before the events of Stranger Things. The story follows a town with ordinary worries: young Jim Hopper’s car will not start, Bob Newby’s sister does not take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado wants to graduate and leave town.

When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that starting again is not simple, and the past begins to shape what happens next. Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, the production uses theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to take audiences back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story.

Duration: Approx 3 hrs including an interval.

Before you book

Age guidance: Recommended 12+. Under 5s are not permitted. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The production contains gunfire audio, loud noises, explosions, haze, smoke, flashing lights and strobe, strong language, and depictions of mental health conditions and disorders.

The venue opens 90 minutes before the start time and you should arrive 30 minutes before the performance. Latecomers will be admitted at a suitable point, which may be the interval. No exchanges or refunds are available after purchase. Accessible performances are listed on selected Sundays at 3pm: BSL Interpreted on 20 September 2026, Audio Described on 27 September 2026, and Captioned on 4 October 2026 and 6 December 2026.
