Abigail's Party at The Harold Pinter Theatre is Mike Leigh's black comedy of suburban life in 1970s England. Set in Essex in 1977, it centres on Beverly hosting drinks for new neighbours Angela and Tony, with Sue from next door also drawn into the evening.
With the alcohol flowing, Demis Roussos on the record player and cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks on the table, the conversation quickly shifts from awkward small talk to flirtation and marital tension. The play is a sharp portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension in a very specific 1970s domestic setting.
