Abigail's Party at The Harold Pinter Theatre is Mike Leigh's black comedy of suburban life, set in Essex in 1977. The play follows Beverly as she hosts a drinks party while the alcohol flows, Demis Roussos plays on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks are ready to go.
Beverly and her husband Laurence welcome new neighbours Angela and Tony round for drinks, with Sue from next door also invited. What begins as awkward small talk quickly moves into flirtation and marital disputes, drawing out the social class, materialism and sexual tension at the centre of Leigh's writing.
Set in 1970s England, the story unfolds during a soirée that turns increasingly uneasy as the evening goes on.
