My Neighbour Totoro is now playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End. It is a stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated feature film, created in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, and adapted by Tom Morton-Smith.
This record-breaking production is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company with Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi. It follows sisters Satsuki and Mei through one extraordinary summer, with the story focusing on childhood, imagination and a magical fantasy world.
Key facts: Winner of six Olivier Awards. Running time is 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 20-minute interval.
Age guidance: Recommended for ages 6+. The production is not suitable for children under 6 years of age, including babes in arms. Children under 4 years old, including babes in arms, will not be admitted to the auditorium. Younger guests are welcome at relaxed performances.
All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, who must be seated with them throughout the visit. Children need to occupy their own seat at all times, and all persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a valid ticket. Please note that single seats cannot be left in a row when booking.
The show features puppets, including some large-scale puppets that interact in audience space. It also contains themes of an ill parent in hospital, live music and sound effects that can be loud at times and possibly scary for some younger children.
