My Neighbour Totoro is playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End. This stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated film follows sisters Satsuki and Mei through one summer shaped by childhood imagination and fantasy.
The production is a collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, brought to the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi. It has won six Olivier Awards and has returned to London as a record-breaking production.
Adapted by Tom Morton-Smith, the show combines live music, puppets and theatrical storytelling. Its story includes themes of an ill parent in hospital.
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
The age recommendation is 6+. The production is not suitable for children under 6 years old, including babes in arms, and children under 4 years old will not be admitted into the auditorium. Children must occupy their own seats throughout the performance. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, who must be seated with them, and every person entering the theatre needs a valid ticket.
Younger children and babes in arms are welcome at relaxed performances. Some puppets are large scale and may interact in audience space, and the show includes live music and sound effects that can be loud at times and may be scary for some younger children. Single seats cannot be left in a row when booking.
