1536 at the Ambassadors Theatre is a historical drama with a modern edge, written by Ava Pickett and directed by Lyndsey Turner. It transferred to the West End following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, and it explores female friendship in a world shaped by power, rumour and violence.
Set in Tudor England, in a field in Essex, the play follows three women who meet at their childhood gathering place and hear word of the clash between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. As rumours spread and violence rises around them, the play draws a parallel between the royal drama and the women’s own lives.
Ava Pickett won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. The production is playing for a strictly limited run, with previews from 2 May 2026.
Running time: 2 hours, no interval.
Age guidance: Key Stage 4 and above. This production contains strong language, depictions of violence and sexual assault, and discussion of miscarriage, rape, domestic violence and traumatic childbirth. It also includes blood, flashing lights and haze.
