1536 is playing at the Ambassadors Theatre in London’s West End. Written by Ava Pickett, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and directed by Lyndsey Turner, this historical drama has transferred to the West End following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre.
Set in Tudor England, the play follows three women in a field in Essex as they gather at their childhood meeting place and hear rumours of a clash between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. As those events begin to echo through their own lives, the story explores female friendship, power and violence in a world stacked against women.
The production has been described as darkly comic and sharply written, and it is playing for a strictly limited run.
