1536 at the Ambassadors Theatre is a historical drama set in Tudor England. Three women meet in an Essex field as rumours from London spread, including news of the clash between King Henry VIII and Queen Anne Boleyn. The play follows how those events begin to echo in their own lives.
Written by Ava Pickett, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and directed by Lyndsey Turner, 1536 transferred to the West End after a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre. It explores female friendship in a world where violence is spreading and private lives are being shaped by events at court.
