1536 at the Ambassadors Theatre is a new play by Ava Pickett set in Tudor England. In a field in Essex, three women meet at their childhood gathering place as rumours spread about King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, drawing royal events into their own rural lives.
The play focuses on female friendship in a world stacked against women, alongside a rise in violence across the land. It transferred to the West End following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre and is directed by Lyndsey Turner.
Pickett won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for the script. 1536 is playing a strictly limited run, with previews from 2 May 2026.
Duration: 2hrs, no interval.
This production is suitable for Key Stage 4 and above. It contains strong language, violence and explicit content, including depictions of violence and sexual assault and discussion of miscarriage, rape, domestic violence and traumatic childbirth. It also includes blood, flashing lights and haze.
