1536 is a historical drama at the Ambassadors Theatre in London. Written by Ava Pickett, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and directed by Lyndsey Turner, the play transfers to the West End after a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre.
Set in Tudor England, the story follows three women in Essex as rumours of a clash between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn spread from London into their own lives. The play looks at female friendship, rural life and rising violence in a world stacked against women.
The production is described as darkly comic and sharply relevant, and it is playing for a strictly limited run from previews on 2 May 2026.
Running time: 2 hours, no interval.
Age guidance: Key Stage 4 and above. This production includes strong language, depictions of violence and sexual assault, and discussion of miscarriage, rape, domestic violence and traumatic childbirth. It also includes blood, flashing lights and haze.
