1536 is playing at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End. Written by Ava Pickett, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and directed by Lyndsey Turner, this historical drama is set in Tudor England and follows three women in an Essex field as rumours from London begin to reach their own lives.
The play centres on female friendship, gossip and the widening effects of violence, as the conflict between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn begins to echo closer to home. It transferred to the West End following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre.
Set against a royal crisis and a landscape of rural tension, 1536 traces how events at court can shape the lives of ordinary women far beyond London.
Running time: 2 hours, with no interval.
Age guidance: Key Stage 4 and above. Content warnings: strong language, violence and explicit scenes. The production is playing for a strictly limited run, with previews from 2 May 2026.
