1536 at the Ambassadors Theatre is a new historical drama with a modern edge, transferring to the West End after a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre. Written by Ava Pickett, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and directed by Lyndsey Turner, it focuses on female friendship and the pressures on women in Tudor England.
Set in a field in Essex, the play follows three women who return to their childhood meeting place as rumours spread of the clash between King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. As gossip from London reaches them, the royal drama begins to echo in their own rural lives and the rising violence around them.
1536 is playing a strictly limited run, with previews from 2 May 2026. It has been described as darkly comic, sharp and sharply relevant.
Key facts: Running time 2 hours, no interval.
Age guidance: Key Stage 4 and above. The production contains strong language, violence and explicit content.
