Shadowlands at the Aldwych Theatre stars BAFTA, Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated actor Hugh Bonneville as C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia. The play follows Lewis’s orderly academic life as an Oxford Don after it is interrupted by the arrival of the American poet Joy Davidman.
What begins as a meeting of minds develops into a story about love and the fragile beauty of life. Written by William Nicholson and adapted from his own original BAFTA Award-winning TV movie, Shadowlands was first a West End success, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, and later transferred to Broadway, where it won a Tony Award.
The play was adapted into a feature film in 1993, directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, and it was awarded the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film. Rachel Kavanaugh directs this strictly limited engagement, which opened at London’s Aldwych Theatre on 5 February.
Evening performances are at 7.30pm and matinees are at 2.30pm.
