Shadowlands at the Aldwych Theatre stars Hugh Bonneville as C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, whose ordered life as an Oxford Don is changed by the arrival of the American poet Joy Davidman. What begins as a meeting of minds develops into a story of love and the fragile beauty of life.
Written by William Nicholson and based on a true story, the play was adapted from Nicholson’s own BAFTA Award-winning TV movie. It later became a West End hit, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, before transferring to Broadway and winning a Tony Award.
Originally a sell-out production at Chichester Festival Theatre, this revival is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh. The play was also adapted into a 1993 feature film directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
