Born Janum Khan in Small Heath, Birmingham, Jaykae is widely recognised as one of the most important and authentic voices in UK grime. A proud Brummie who has repped 0121 since breaking through in the late 2000s, Jaykae has played a central role in shifting the narrative of British rap beyond London, helping establish Birmingham as a true cultural and musical powerhouse.
Emerging from Birmingham's grassroots grime scene via pirate radio, MSN freestyles, and early YouTube platforms, Jaykae built his reputation on ferocious delivery, sharp lyricism, and an unmistakable Brummie accent. His rise accelerated with the release of Where Have You Been?, followed by defining tracks such as "Toothache," "Moscow," and "Pull Up," each amassing millions of streams and
cementing his status as the essential voice of the city.
Across his career, Jaykae has collaborated with some of the UK's most respected artists, including Ed Sheeran, Skepta, Stormzy & Mike Skinner (The Streets), while performing on major platforms such as BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, Fire in the Booth, and at festivals including Glastonbury, Wireless, Reading & Leeds, Creamfields, and more. He has supported Skepta on the Konnichiwa tour, Stormzy at key live shows, and joined The Streets on their celebrated comeback tour-an association that
reflects his deep cultural credibility and influence.
Jaykae's impact extends beyond music, he made his acting debut in BBC Three's Man Like Mobeen, playing the character Azar, and his music has crossed into global pop culture, with "Toothache" featured in the award-winning US TV series Power.
Now operating as both an artist and a cultural leader, Jaykae is equally committed to building infrastructure and opportunity for the next generation. Alongside his own career, he plays an active role in artist development and mentorship, most notably as manager to Birmingham-born fighter Ibraheem "Spider" Sulaimaan, guiding his professional journey with the same authenticity, discipline, and city-first mentality that has defined Jaykae's own rise. This move reflects Jaykae's broader mission:
not just to succeed individually, but to bring Birmingham with him, across music, sport, and culture.
Rooted in a deeply multicultural upbringing and shaped by the realities of his environment, Jaykae remains a pure grime artist at heart, respected for staying true to his sound, his city, and his values, while continuing to evolve his influence well beyond the mic.
