Formed in late 2018, by a mixture of prodigal wanderers returning, and a malcontent who never left, Birmingham’s Modern Literature are a combination of post punk’s icy atmosphere and the impassioned snarl of an alcohol laced preacher. Lyrically biased towards the 21st Century’s betrayal of the human condition, they are tarnished by existence and dreaming of an insular escape, while being doused in the stench of Pinter’s hated brandy. Modern Literature produce a combination of ethereal soundscapes and incessant rhythmic motifs. They metamorphose from breakneck rants to a sedate and sinister stagger, with the seeming immediacy of Kafka’s ill-fated salesman Gregor Samsa, expelling inner turmoil via cathartic and intense performances.
