Biography

James Stephen is a blues-infused-Americana artist with an unashamed passion for his northern hometown of Stockport. Leaning back (rather comfortably) on his large bed of influences, James’ music proves he isn’t afraid to incorporate other genres into his work, making his take on Americana a refreshingly liberal one. Often citing his beloved Paul Simon as the greatest lyricist of all time, James endeavours to capture the essences of life’s labyrinthian challenges in a simple manner: cultivating strong emotions in merely a few words whilst carefully honing melodic guitar work around them.

After seeping into the open mic scene at the age of 15, James has steadily asserted himself amongst the stalwarts of unsigned Manchester. Captivating audiences with his powerful, gritty vocals and effortless delivery, James has also become a Sofar Sounds regular, playing shows across Europe and becoming a favourite on their global playlists.

Following the successful release of his debut effort, Patchwork EP, James has steadily released single after single to much fanfare, including a DIY sold-out show in Manchester for Just Like That..., a co-headline gig with Kevin Daniel and Lorena Leigh for Washed Away, and achieving worldwide radio coverage for Until You. culminating in the eagerly anticipated follow-up EP 'Til It Comes Around Again..., released in December 2020.

Along the way, James has supported The Dunwells, Mosa Wild and US-charting band David Wax Museum amongst many others.
