Freak Show!
Overall rating: 4

I was excited from the moment I saw my free glow-in-the-dark fangs... This was going to be something special! An intimate (but crowded) venue, with gothic decoration and a live Jack O'Lantern... Creepy pianist (live) in the background...

The Freaks took to the stage - for their launch show. And what a launch! In hot red wigs, platform boots, and purple mini-dresses - the girls knew how to put on a show as they flanked Jake Wheeler (with his messy blonde hair...). Opening with a smacker 'This is Halloween', the real kick in the teeth came in the form of song two - Jekyll and Hyde's 'Bring on the Men' - the two ladies owned the stage, belted, entertained, and joked their way through - before one donned glasses to become the ultimate geek for an ode to Sci-Fi.

The first guest act was Miss Fay - beautifully dressed and whippeting through her Tom Lehrer numbers (including the classic 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park') with gusto, vigour, and glee. The crowd were on her side every time she entered! German burlesque act Lydia Wild was an androgynous, sexy and funny addition to the night.

Conlon and Hunt were our magicians for the night - with tight leotards, nails, and a lot of 'danger' and 'doom' (though one too many mentions of their terrible fight with flu!) The Irish Alan had a twinkle in his eye, and the ladies loved Mr. Hunt's toned physique. A fantastic set culminated with unicycling, juggling, and piggy-backs (all in one).

The Freaks returned for many songs throughout the night - all well sung, some familiar, some new surprises. Highlights of the sets included: Little Shop's "Dentist" - with the sexy schoolgirl backing, the theme from "Cabaret" (including some classy heckling of the unfortunate latecomers), Rocky Horror's "Tou-tou-touch Me" - more more more! Special mention, though, for the impeccable Barry Bostwick send up by one of the girls (Sweet Transvestite). Comic genius - especially when flanked by a monster transvestite at least twice her size!

More introduction to all the acts would have helped to round the crowd, but never-the-less, when the Freaks launched into their last two numbers "The Corpse Bride" and "Murder Murder" we all knew we'd had a good night's entertainment!
