I love NJ's style of music usually, but this set was a dissapointment- especially as i'd convinced 8 of my friends to come on down there too. Music wasn't bad as such but there was no real energy. After 2.5 hours of NJ we called it a night- maybe he saved the best for last- maybe we'll never know! |

NJs set was great, he played some awesome tracks, although he did peak early 12 till 1pm was better than 1pm till 2pm. I was quite underwhelmed by the crowd reaction to him - atmosphere was happy and good but nobody seemed that bothered that NJ was there. And I totally agree about the resident DJ who came on after NJ - he started off playing some really lame stuff - we left soon afterwards. I think he was being polite and just trying to make NJ look good. |

I presume thats what the residents after Norman Jay were doing. Not hearing those hits would be like not playing the national anthem on the queens birthday |

I agree with the energy part to some degree he took it down a bit slow 1:30 till 2am. I really enjoyed the residents set, at 2am when I was flagging and after Norman Jay taking it down I really wanted to hear some big tunes to be honest, the dancefloor stayed busy until 3:30 so I assume that I wasn't alone dancing. |

JMS Offline Points:2388 Posts: 28 | Re: absolutely terrible Norman Jay was booked to give Funkademia's 13th Birthday a different slant and this he did. The night has been built on its residents and we've only had 5 guest DJ's on in those 13 years (Norman Jay, Greg Wilson, Dave Haslam, Jason Boardman and Neil Smallridge). We have a large group of resident DJ's that we rotate regularly so each week is different. We don't sell ourselves as being cutting edge but feel we give a bit more than most nights without charging inflated entry prices. This night brought together a crowd of regulars and new customers who were there for Norman Jay and its a shame that everybody didn't have a great night as we tried to create a birthday party atmosphere with a guest DJ that is known for his 'good times' sets. Our resident DJ's know what the regular crowd wanted and played tracks that have been big at Funkademia for the past 13 years and the majority of people who were there stayed after Norman Jay until 3.30am and had a great time. |

I havent seen Norman Jay; been to One Central or attended Funkademia before and had no expectations but I was totally disappointed. I danced, but only because I may as well have.. Were in Manchester are the decent nights that just play great music - will someone please tell me...? |

After running parties myself around Manchester it certainly is a feat to hit such a milestone in 13 years of running parties. It a shame that a lot of people in Manchester think that due to our cities rich music heritage that they expect the next 'free trade hall' event every time they go out. |

taylee Offline Points:24 Posts: 2 | Re: absolutely terrible I agree with chairmankato. When the words of Stealers Wheel cried through the painfully unequalised sound system, Well I dont know why I came here tonight, I got a feelin that something aint right. I was among those who agreed. Later on, the relative obscurity of Get Into the Groove sung by Madonna was enough to clear out those making up the majority of the dance-floor who werent drunk enough to be unfaithful to their Sunday Express Motown compilations. I was disappointed with Norman in the end. Rather than attempting to use his tunes as tools for creating a party atmosphere like any good DJ, he appeared to instead use each of his tracks as a means to postpone the remainder of a woefully uninspired set. Apart from a promising sequence of underground disco early on in his set, the most entertainment I got out of the night came from watching the bizarre sight of an amateur break-dancer jolting on all fours to Bill Withers Lovely Day. It wasnt the first time Id said Whats that about??! I also agree about the bar staff They ranged from unreasonably disgruntled to just drunk. I wont be going back to Funkademia in a hurry. |

And as for the bar staff, we had no problems with them, actually we were having a laugh with them they were that friendly!? I am not much of a dancer but every time we went over, it was always packed solid, so I think that the majority of people were having a good time. Even the people around us were having a good time. All in all it was an awsome night and the music was excellent, keep up with the good work guys and happy buffday! ![]() |

![]() hockeyaddict Offline Points:0 Posts: 1 | Re: absolutely terrible I am not sure I would class any of the Funkademia Nights as Absolutely Terrible... Granted some nights are better than others and it all depends on the music played and the people you are with... I personally think that this was a great night and everyone enjoyed themselves and if they didn't then it sure didn't look like it from the dance floor... i mean would you dance to music you didn't like?? or dance for the sake of dancing?? Myself personally if i didn't like the music in a club where ever that may be wouldnt be hanging around till 3:30am dancing on the dance floor i would be getting out of there... My point being... sorry i do tend to waffle... Is that i dont think anyone in the club looked like they were not enjoying themselves... many happy faces and many people being really nice to each other like they usually do at thing great night... oh and the barstaff well come on guys did you see how packed it was?? and how many customers they have to serve if they are not being nicey nicey to you that doesnt mean they are bad people just that they are just trying to serve everyone that comes to the bar as fast as possible and if you catch them when they are not busy... i can tell you right now they would love to talk to you and have a laugh... i have experienced this many times i can tell you. I would definately go there night after night just for the great people there and the awesome music that gets played... bring on the next event... woop woop A funkademia_addict |

I've never been to Funkademia before and I was looking forward to seeing NJ, of the "Good Times" soundsytem, on comfortable territory, mixing classic house, funk, soul and disco. Instead I got a lazy DJ on autopilot, whose headphones only graced his ears long enough to help him cue up and fade in obvious track after obvious track. There was absolutely nothing interesting or energetic about his set. In fact during peak hour he actually managed to bring the tempo and energy down, which is an impressive feat in a room of sweaty expectant revellers like me and my friends.
I should've made the most of this, however, for the following resident made NJ's set sound like something that had been beamed down from mars. The DJ in question made us suffer with a bombardment of continual cheese- song after song that you have head a millions times before: Groove is in the heart/sex machine/superstition etc. Really really boring, a shameful lowest common denominator deluge of well known hits. Some people did indeed seem to be having a good time and I commend them for this because I bitterly disappointed, as you can probably tell.
Couple all of this with a motley crew of rude and dysfunctional bartenders and you have a recipe for disaster. I can safely say I will never take the risk on either Norman Jay or "Funkademia" (the title says it all) again.
I hope other people managed to salvage more enjoyment out of it than me....
