The Grimsby Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the year in the Minster on
Saturday, May 18th at 3:30 p.m. sees a return to the podium of Music Director Susan
Grant after her six-month sabbatical. She has chosen a relatively light programme
entitled ‘Invitation to the Dance’, featuring in the main tuneful music from the world
of either ballet or folk dancing.
The programme includes Tchaikowsky’s ever-popular ‘Swan Lake’ Suite and ‘Les
Chasseresses’ from Delibes’s ‘Sylvia’ to represent ballet, Johann Strauss’s ‘Voices of
Spring’ and ‘Pizzicato Polka’ showcasing the sophistication of nineteenth-century
Vienna and two of Brahms’s ‘Hungarian Dances’ (nos. 5 and 6) to reflect folk
dancing. Then, as a change from all this terpsichore, for a grand finale the orchestra
will play two movements from Camille Saint-Saens’s ‘Organ Symphony’, taking
advantage of the availability of the Minster’s majestic organ and featuring the resident
organist.
