Harry Ramsden’s Staxton opening: 100 free fish & chips giveaway

Harry Ramsden’s, the iconic British institution, is returning to its Yorkshire roots with the launch of a brand-new restaurant in Staxton, opening its doors to guests on May 2, 2026. Celebrating the homecoming in style, the Staxton store is offering FREE fish and chips for those who visit across the weekend - a modern-day nod to the brand’s historic “Big Fry” in 1952, when more than 10,000 portions were served in a single day.

The catch? You’ll need to present a copy of Harry Ramsden’s limited-edition newspaper - The Frying Times - to claim a free chippy tea.

Inspired by the tradition of fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, The Frying Times is a bespoke, vintage-style newspaper that includes a pull out voucher to redeem a free chippy tea at the new Staxton restaurant. It also features local profiles, “fishy” horoscopes and a look back at the brand’s Yorkshire origins, dating back to 1928. Copies have been distributed across York and Scarborough, with a digital edition available online for those unable to get a print copy. 

The return of Harry Ramsden’s to Staxton marks a symbolic full-circle moment for the business, with customers able to expect its signature commitment to craftsmanship, hand-poured secret recipe batter, and classic chip shop experience - complemented by fish and chips fried in beef dripping, the traditional northern way, delivering the legendary golden crunch that made Harry Ramsden’s world famous.

Yorkshire is where our story began nearly a century ago, and we felt it was only fitting to mark our return by celebrating with the local community. The Staxton restaurant officially opens on Saturday 2nd May, 2026. Customers can redeem their free chippy tea from 2nd – 31st May, but are urged to act fast as only the first 100 portions are available within the offer. Terms and conditions apply*.
