About

Have you ever wondered how our brains process and heal from life’s toughest moments? Many of us carry unresolved experiences – whether it’s a difficult breakup, childhood criticism, or a lingering fear – that can quietly limit our confidence, relationships, or success.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help people move beyond trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. In this talk, we’ll explore how EMDR was developed and address the compelling question:“How can moving my eyes possibly help me heal from trauma?”We’ll look at the types of experiences EMDR can support and what it’s actually like to participate in EMDR therapy. We’ll also reflect on how emotional distress is understood in our society today – examining both the benefits and limitations of framing distress as a ‘mental health condition’.

Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

Speaker Bio:

Dr Susannah Colbert is a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience working across a range of NHS settings. She began training in EMDR in 2017 and immediately found that the approach resonated deeply with her understanding of human psychology – particularly the impact of trauma and adverse life experiences. Dr Colbert now holds an academic position at the Solomons Institute of Applied Psychology, where she supervises research exploring various dimensions of EMDR. Her current research interests include intensive EMDR, therapeutic work with avoidance and dissociation, and the role of attachment processes in EMDR. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Colbert maintains a private practice, where she continues to deliver EMDR therapy to clients presenting with a wide range of psychological concerns.
