TERRY YOLO

Terry Yolo takes the much-worn path of sampling and looping composition to boss level. Often sourcing familiar sounds from music, TV and film into sometimes disquieting soundfields or into eerie furrows of arpeggiating queasy nostalgia, laced with a melancholy for a long-expired modernity. These latter forms of hauntological reflection are often re-enforced with snippets of super 8 or library films displaying familiar national pastimes or domestic activities that force us to question, problematise and reflect upon our own nostalgic tendencies amid an emergent culture that often seeks to weaponize the familiar/the national/the colloquial into new and dangerous political forms.

What emerges is a sonically fresh take on the genre that will appeal to fans of ambient music as well as those interested in drone or post-classical minimalism or even the experimental output of labels such as Touch and Mego.

MATTROBSON

An adherent to the "idiot's path" and completely unencumbered by talent or ability, Matt Robson has ridden off-piste and amateur through the powder fields of indie rock and electronica for over 30 years of creative practice as a drummer and producer respectively. Now finding himself located, metaphorically speaking, in some distant high-altitude location, shouting at the wind, employing an aesthetic that puts a contemporary spin on the classic complex electronica of Warp and Planet Mu, embracing an unpopular mix of melody and anti-melody. Detailed yet scattershot rhythms are constructed with distant references to electro and hip hop that rub up against sound design and islands of atonality, but there are also moments of melody and transcendence as the music, as digital and computer based as it is, seeks to be a soundtrack to our ever decaying and morally broken human condition.

TR4NSIENTS

As one of the co-founders of the highly regarded Ambient Leeds nights, Alex takes his great love for gothic music and culture and re-invigorates these aesthetic forms with a moody and dystopian take on electro that calls to mind an early Sisters of Mercy, if they were an instrumental outfit, and had been teleported into Boards of Canada's studio.

What emerges is a moody and strident electronic music that calls to mind the genres of synthwave and coldwave and other darker and sombre forms, where classic drum machine timbres lay down a solid bedrock for the glacial and Icey synth pads that float menacingly atop.

Frequently accompanied by vintage sci-fi footage, which once spoke of a fetishised retro-futurism, this aesthetic mixture offers us a rumination on our own contemporary decent into an ever-beckoning totalitarianism.
