Obia
It’s the name broadly given to Afro-diasporic spiritual, sorcery, &
healing traditions once found in parts the West Indies.
The music tells tales from the Caribbean, their people & folklore, A story of
degradation of the spirit, resilience and re- emergence of being.
Amidst seas of spiritual torment, take place creation & healing, that form
powerfully daring conceptualisations of futures unknown.
The writing began on band leader Tristan’s island home of Barbados, drawing
influences from his childhood, Obia maps the connections between the Afro-
diasporas' shared history & musical forms.
Elements of Calypso, Son Cubano, Dub & Jazz are fused together on this
journey through the vast sonic tapestry of the Caribbean.
There is a saying “One People” that speaks to the shared experience & unity
aspirations of the Caribbean, Obia is its sound.
Once meeting Glasgow nu jazz scene stalwarts Norman Vilaroux, Harry Wier
& Joe Wiseberg combined with Afro-Latin percussionist Ben Vardi the fertile
ground was set to bloom.
Sun Red Sun
Sun Red Sun is an Edinburgh based 5-piece jazz fusion project, blending modal jazz, neo-soul, nu-jazz, electronica and glitched loops. Bringing together intimate sax and vocals with a tight, bass-heavy rhythm section, they combine delicate melodic sensitivity with a driving heartbeat of drums, bass and keys. With beautiful, entrancing compositions full of nostalgia, joy, and a hefty dose of swaying, powerful and danceable grooves, this is not a group to be missed.
