What is Rubic? Why the Name Change?

Motion has long been committed to supporting the trance music scene by showcasing emerging talent. Over the years, we’ve proudly hosted guest DJs who have gone on to achieve significant success. Did you know Motion gave Jon O’Bir his first-ever gig? Or that Dylan was one of our original residents? And that John O’Callaghan’s first UK performance was at a Motion event?

Our dedication to nurturing new talent remains strong. We’ve mentored countless DJs, helping them grow and gain valuable experience. However, as Motion continues to expand—bringing you world-class A-list DJs—we face limitations in providing opportunities for up-and-coming artists at our main events. Quite simply, there aren’t enough slots to accommodate everyone.

Additionally, our move to hosting events at The BlueNote in Derby, while still running smaller events at The Xchange in Ripley, has led to some confusion.

To address this, we’re introducing Rubic—the new name for all events held at The Xchange in Ripley. We plan to host 3–4 Rubic events annually, with a clear focus on developing new talent. Rubic will serve as a platform for aspiring DJs to gain real club experience, receive mentorship, and build the confidence needed to perform at larger events.

Think of Rubic as a DJ university: a place where skills are honed, and potential is recognised. DJs who show promise will have the opportunity to progress—first by supporting Motion afterparties, and eventually by performing at our main Motion events.

Rubic Launch Night & Christmas Party

We’re kicking things off with a bang—Rubic’s official launch night also doubles as our annual Christmas party, one of the most anticipated events of the year. Once again, we take over The Xchange in Ripley, a venue known for its state-of-the-art sound system and plush interior.

To celebrate, we’re releasing tickets at the lowest possible price as a thank-you to all our loyal followers. Expect the same electric atmosphere and energy you know from Motion—just under a new name.
