About

Welcome to Hidden Wirral Myths & Legends Tours. This tour is focused on the Smugglers of Parkgate and The River Dee. Your tour guides are local authors and historians Gavin Chappell and Tony Franks-Buckley who are the leading experts on Pirates & Smugglers of the Wirral Peninsula. The Meeting time will be 12pm but if you can arrive for around 11.45 that would make it easier for us to leave on time. We shall be gathering at the site of The Old Quay pub situated on the river front. Children are Free of Charge when accompanied by an Adult. Hidden Wirral wishes to promote local history as much as possible to the younger generations. However Group or Private bookings will require a fee. Address: The Old Quay, Station Rd, Parkgate, Neston, Wirral CH64 6QJ Leaving from the Old Quay, you shall be taken to all the key historic places of Parkgate along the river front, mixing local history with the myths & Legends that surround the historic area situated on the River Dee. Parkgate is now seperated from the River Dee due to the silting of the river and the are is now occupied with marshland which attracts all types of various wildlife to the area. Still popular with tourists, it boasts bird watching, regionally famous homemade ice cream, sunsets and fresh local seafood, including shrimps and cockles. During seasonal high tides the water reaches the sea wall, and visitors arrive at the village to witness the unusual sight. Bird watchers also come at this time to watch the birds usually hidden in the grasses of the marshland. In addition, bird watchers will regularly visit such locations as the Old Baths site, to the North of the village, from which many interesting species may be seen. There will be several other local historians such as Tony Franks-Buckley and David Shirley who will also be giving talks about the local history of the area. We will be finishing at the old grounds of the outdoor bathing pool situated further down the Promenade. The tour will generally last for 2 hours and there is also the opportunity to ask questions to any of our guides once the tour is over about any other parts of Wirral History, we head back to The Red Lion, where cheap food and drink is available to purchase. Directions to the tour: If you are travelling via bus, Mersey Travel have the 487,488 service from Liverpool to Parkgate with various pick up points across the Wirral. You can view the timetable here. http://www.arrivabus.co.uk/serviceInformation.aspx?id=2328 If you are travelling via Car, you can enter the postcode for SatNav or you can search via google maps, but Parkgate is signposted in all directions of Wirral.
