Biography

Lynn (aka DJ Fluff), fell into Dj’ing by accident one night back in the early 90’s. She was helping run the bar in the house music room fro Aardvark Sound System at a large illegal “squat party” somewhere in Hackney, when one of the main Djs failed to turn up. This was back when CD decks were in their infant stages, but there was a very basic set of CD decks alongside the standard 1210’s. Fluff has always had a huge collection of dance music, and the organisers knew she had a huge selection in her car. So, they begged her to go get them and fill in the gap until the next DJ arrived. Having never even seen a set of CD decks before, let alone used them, or mixed before, she was terrified, but figured there not many people in the room as this is not the main room, so gave it a go. Within half an hour, word had travelled, and the main room downstairs practically emptied and before she knew it, there were now 5,000 people dancing away in front of the decks. No mixing going on at all, just fading one tune out and another in, whilst shaking like a leaf, and kind of enjoying the buzz at the same time. 2-hours later the next DJ turned up, and congratulations all round and cheers from the crowd, off Fluff went back to help behind the bar and announcing thank god that’s over! The organiser then announced that she had better buy a set of decks and get practicing and handed over the list of promoters’ phone numbers that had been left behind the bar wanting her to play at their parties. At that time, squat parties were full of music industry people.

So there the hobby that very quickly took off to an almost full-time hobby. Fluff was playing every Sunday at ‘The Spitz’ in Spitalfields market, played regularly for ‘Magic Loungabout’ parties, ‘Bingly Bongly’ parties still carried on playing at squat parties all over London. Then the promotor for ‘Smartie Party’ in London, Trace Harris, whom she knew as a teen contacted her and asked if she wanted a slot at the ‘Glasshouse’ in London as a try out. This went well and from there Fluff landed the regular gig at ‘Turnmills’ in the VIP bar for ‘Smartie Party’. One evening whilst playing in the VIP bar Fluff was approached by a promotor from Ibiza and was talked into flying out there to play at some private parties. Fluff flew out 1 week later and ended up staying for 3 months. Fluff had the time of her life, free entry into everywhere and playing at some really cool events and private parties over the Island.

Whilst playing at a huge ‘Millenium’ rave on the Thames for NYE 2000, she was introduced to Cathy Battistessa, who Fluff had been a fan off for many years, and Cathy asked if she could sing whilst she was DJ’ing. There started a year’s long partnership and Fluff DJ’ing and Cathy singing live. They played together all over Europe and had a great time. They still do this every now and again now. Through Cathy, Fluff has played at ‘Mambo’ and ‘Café Del Mar’ many times, as well as many private events in Ibiza and the UK. In between all of this, Fluff regularly played in South Africa, at outdoor trance parties in the mountains, providing the chilled area and a little bit of Ibiza to counteract the full-on trance music elsewhere. She also found herself on tour with U2 in the USA with her ex-boyfriend, who was the bands wardrobe master, and played at Bono’s birthday party in Chicago. The gig itself was very stressful and she has to keep asking Whoopi Goldberg and Jude Law to stop putting their drinks on the CD decks as they were not a table, and the rocker entourage of the band asking for “rock” tunes. At that gig though she met some amazing female DJ’s who were big on the Chicago house scene, that took her under their wing for a few days. The best record shopping and warehouse raves ever!! Anyway, these days Fluff has semi hung up her headphones, and only plays at private events where she knows people. It got very boring flying off somewhere every weekend alone, as mates can only afford to come sometimes. The hobby, although paid well, was never her full- time job, she has her own business which needed running, and it was starting to get tedious. So now she only plays when she wants to.
