Jah Wobble - genius!
Overall rating: 4.5

Really starting to love the ruby lounge as a venue - cheap tickets, intimate surroundings and very relaxed/friendly (and central too!).

Jah Wobble was great - and Marconi Union (support) equally so (nice to see musicians where the emphasis is on the music NOT image!

Jah (and drummer) created some of the deepest grooves I've ever heard live, and the selection of musicians (from the fabulous multi instrument flautist to the Koto/Dizi etc) were top class. And a nice selection of tunes from fusion/acid jazz grooves to Dub, reggae and world music styles.
Great!

Good to be back
Overall rating: 4

This night was pretty good actually. The Royal Chains were the first band on and after listening to their stuff on You Tube, I had to get there early to see them. The next band was Transfer which wasn't my cuppa tea but they got the crowd going. There was a massive gap between them and The Bravery. I would say 45 minutes and this wasn't great for me as I had been to the gym and standing up was becoming increasingly difficult. Anyhow, around 10pm they turned up on stage and played quite a few of hits from their first self titled album. This got the place going and it was good to have them back after last seeing them 4 years ago in Bristol. They played a few of their new tracks off the new album which were welcomed too. Highlights for me must have been Honest Mistake and the outro of Fearless.
All in all, the venue is great with a meaty sound system. Drink prices are what you expect in The Northern Quarter but for a student like myself, that's not cheap enough. Definitely will go again and I am. Next time it's The Boxer Rebellion. Definitely check out this place.

Kong at the Ruby Lounge for Wotgodforgot
Overall rating: 4.5

Well that has to be one of the loudest gigs I've ever been to and I can see tinnitus setting in.

Apes Fight Back set the tone for the night and I was kind of hoping that none of the other bands would be as loud as i was feeling a little fragile.

Trojan Horse followed and right from the off they reminded me of Fugazi in their style and also in volume. As there was a lot of shouting and screaming I had decided that in view of my throbbing head I watched from the safety of the bar.

Castrovalva had not played for a nearly a year but this Leeds based screamo three peice band tore into their set like a ravaging Tornado.

Kong obviously have a decent following as most of the people I spoke to had seen them beforehand and they were coming back for more. It's easy to see why. They are a loud metal/screamo band that offer just the right amount of experimental rhythm to keep most people happy. They also look a little scary with their clear plastic masks and red Y-fronts. Sadly they made my headache so much worse than it already was that I had to go to the bar and buy some more medicine as prescribed by Dr Jack Daniels.
All in all a loud and interesting night.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw @ The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
Overall rating: 4.5

A Hawk and Hacksaw

Ruby Lounge, Manchester: 22/06/09

I love discovering bands, but as I am basically a lazy person I therefore tend to let some of the local promoters actually do all the discovering and for me to just simply turn up to one of their gigs. Mind you one has to trust the promoter and as there are quite a few good ones in Manchester, I do get to see more than my fair share of unknown but astonishingly good bands.

One promoter I have placed my faith in is the curiously titled WotGodforgot and my life is all that richer for knowing them for without their hard work I never would have seen A Hawk and A Hacksaw.

As a very Eastern European looking group of musicians take to the stage I am surprised by the announcement that they come from New Mexico and not the Balkans! And Im not really sure this is true because although Jeremy Barnes (the one that speaks, sings and plays the accordion) has an American accent, one of the other musicians definitely speaks with a pretty thick Yorkshire accent that could have only have come from Bradford or Leeds.

Whatever the origins of A Hawk and a Hacksaw there is no question that the sound these excellent musicians produce with their array of unusual instruments (accordion, bazouki, violin etc) is Eastern European and when the brass kicks in theres even a Mexican mariachi band feel about it as well. Sometimes they play cheerful little folk numbers as Heather Trosts electric violin and Barnes accordion pick over the delicate tunes and then just as easily they play a sombre march that would not seem out of place in a Hungarian cemetery. But this organic, idiosyncratic mix of Eastern European folk and Jeremy Barnes earlier electronic American rock influences (he was a member of Neutral Milk Hotel) works wonderfully well and its no surprise that the audience are spellbound.

Before the night was over the band produce another unusual instrument - a Rumanian horn violin or a Stroh violin that I last saw in the hands of Icelandic band MÚM. The instrument can be played in the conventional way with a bow but this time Trost chose to scrape and drag a loose string through her resin covered fingers. I personally felt this didnt add anything to the set but those around me were mesmerised by its appearance. Near the end of the show the band left the stage and mingled among the audience to play a couple of accoustic numbers before leaving and then coming back to persistent shouts of 'more'.

Most of the tonights set consisted of tracks taken from the bands excellent new album titled Delivrance which I can thoroughly recommend.

All good stuff and you should check them out. There are plenty of references on the internet and they have a myspace site also (www.myspace.com/ahawkandahacksaw).

Max Steinberger.

The Doors(Alive) were fantastic and well worth it. I thought the venue wasn't large enough, with a post in the middle of the dance floor the drinks were well expensive and the lap dancers that came on after the gig were minging!! Take or leave the Ruby Lounge if there's a act you really have to see take your own drinks!!!

AngelaWilliams's Review of Guns 2 Roses at The Ruby Lounge

I am so gutted - I was really ill on Saturday and missed the event. I was so so so gutted.

When are they playing again? Do the band have a schedule of dates?

I live in Swinton, Pendlebury and know that the Moses Gate Pub in Farnworth also has tribute bands playing - so if they were ever scheduled to play there I could go and see them then.

Boo hoo - poor me - I can't believe I missed them. Saw the real GnR at City Ground in Manchester in 1992 - absolutely fantastic !!!! So G2R would have been the next best thing by the sound of it.

jonnyquirk's Review of Guns 2 Roses at The Ruby Lounge
Overall rating: 4.5

This was a quality event - from the first few riffs of Mr Brownstone and Civil War - all the way to their 2 encores - with all the hits such as 'Jungle and Paradise City - it was 110% fun and laughs all the way! Tribute acts are always great fun because of the comedy element - and they had it down to a tee with "Axl" changing outfit at least 3 times during the night and passing a big bottle of JD through the crowd to have a sip of, while "Slash" did numerous solos and had the crowd mesmerised over and over again!

I would definetely go and see them again and I'm already looking forward to more events at the Ruby Lounge (which is a great venue and the beers are not too over-priced) - including seeing The Doors Alive in April!

Overall - a great way to spend a Saturday night!
