Reviews: Hot in House With ki Creighton

14th Feb 2007

It's been a while since we heard from our SuperJock Ki Creighton, so February makes a welcome return for him to our screens. Taking us through what's hot on his dancefloors at the moment, you can find Ki playing at UBER in Carlisle and various dates around the country.

Tiger stripes – voyage (king street)

Every now and then a track comes along that totally unites a dancefloor and lifts the whole vibe of a night, this new tiger stripes track is doing that for me at present. Built around a Balearic background with tribalesque beats this monster from the king street camp will be a hitter in Miami. The live violin and string samples are right on the money and give the track that so infectious lift that holds everyone’s attention. Can defo see this forthcoming with a vocal as its only an instrumental at present 9 /10

Dennis ferrer – church lady (king street / defected)

That man ferrer is once again proving why he is regarded as one of houses finest producers. Church lady in its original form is a no nonsense club pounder. Driving beats an infectious vocal and a ballsy baseline are the staple part of this tracks diet. Remix’s come courtesy of Dj spen & Thommy Davis and a dub from rodamall, both are class. Thommy and spen keep the original vibe alive but add a chant to the vocal and tighten up the beats in a tribal style with a slight gospel piano section. Rodamaal’s mix is a more minimal affair with electro undertones and wobbly baseline, the vocal is gone and replaced with a snippet of “hallelujah” hot! 9/10

Jamie Jones – panic (crosstown rebels)

Panic reminds me of the early days when the west / east coast sound was hitting the u.k and everyone was vibing away to deep dubby numbers at 6am in a sweaty basement club, it’s got that whole halo& hipp-e meets doc martin thang going on. I love how it works on the break to give the kick back that special lost in space feel. Reactions to this have been special to say the least. Track two “paper trail” is a deeper affair altogether fusing acid and a sub bass with clever studio FX. One for the headz 8/10

Robbie Williams – never touch that switch (switch remix) (EMI)

Ok so now the mighty switch have turned their hands to the even mightier Mr Williams. Listening to the remix though Robbie only appears in the form a snippet vocal, good thing bad thing you decide. I have gone for the good thing side of the coin as the production on this slams harder than Michael Jordan in his prime. Everyone by now knows the formula that Dave Taylor follows but boy how it works on a dancefloor. The b side to this has a crazy ass acid affair from “nighmoves” which is absolutely nuts and a wicked little dub from “dark horse” who use a little more of Robbies vocal and wrap it around a laser effect baseline. Already being championed by tong on radio one 9/10

Dj jeroenski – electronic / wannabe dj’s - whoops (cr2 digital)

Dutch dj / producer jeroenski has been putting out some pretty fly tracks for some time now and makes his debut here for cr2’s new cr2 digital imprint. Big room ballsy electronica is the only way to describe this.
Fusing electro synths together with pumping beats and rhythms, sure to be at the front of most big room player’s boxes. Whoops by the wannabe dj’s follows a more heads down no nonsense formula and is pretty basic in its structure. 8/10 & 7/10

Faze action – in the trees 2007 mixes (Juno records)

Originally released on nuphonic back in 1996 this seminal house classic will once again see the light of day under super efficient online record store juno’s new house output label aptly named “juno records” . Those given the honour of remixing this amazing piece of electronica are “Carl Craig” and “Jerome sydenham & tiger stripes”. Carl Craig’s mix showcases very little to the original and weighs in with a minimal electro techno feel fusing warped layered fx around a searing analogue baseline utilising the string section but keeping it to a near minimal. The mix of choice for me is one of the three sydenham / tripes rub’s. The rendition mix has the super warm baseline and guitar / string hook in abundance and holds all the keys to the original, the dark rub has a more edgier set of beats and again wraps itself around the strings with subtle effect. The club mix goes more for the floor in an epic stylee. Rounding off the package has to be the original in all its glory. Juno are set to release ten classic tracks this year with a variation of mixes to boot. This is a great way to start. 10/10 (original mix is a seminal classic and deserves nothing less)

Kraak & smack – no sun in the sky (jalapeno)

The original of this is low key dubbed out breaks affair with a very cool broken beat acidic feel to it. Mixes for fans of the 4/4 come courtesy of Henrik Schwarz, Tom Belton and Noogman & Infekto. Henrik goes more minimal in his sounds with the vocal taking main stage and the ride free flowing around a distorted analogue base and underlying piano section , very cool.
Tom Belton has the more peak time ingredients with floor friendly beats giving of a feel good disco vibe. The vocal is full on here for the ride.
Noogman goes for the soul with a mellow skip beat and infecto the cut up formula. Nice indeed 8 / 10

Jimmy ponzio & ruanne feat sarah tanker – I got something for you (subliminal)

The original of this track is a middle of the road house affair with live guitars bouncing off an electro led baseline, the vocal is pretty obvious and will appeal to main room jocks who like things elektro. My choice cut is definitely the “who da funk vs. jimmy ponzio” edit. A more pounding mix altogether with the vocal cut up and layered over a driving sleazy groove altogether differing from the original and defo the one for the serious heads.
