The Butterfly Effect Festival ? a new festival taking place in Croydon on 28 and 29th July - has chosen the Lives Not Knives charity to highlight its pioneering work helping young people to take positive and preventative action against knife crime.
Money raised from ticket sales will provide vital funds for the charity?s roadshows across primary and secondary schools as well as 1-1 mentoring and career support for around 100 young people in Pupil Referral Units and most at risk from exclusion.
Lives Not Knives was set up by Eliza Rebeiro when she was just 14 having seen the impact knife crime was having on her community. She now leads a team of seven specially trained 18 to 24-year-olds, who visit schools to talk to children as young as seven.
Charles Instiful, the Festival?s producer said:
?We chose Lives Not Knives because they are having a meaningful and positive impact on young people at grass roots level. We?ve seen music take the blame for problems in society but bringing people together through a music festival is a powerful way to drive change.?
?This is about supporting young people and helping to realise their huge talent and potential. We hope this will make more people aware of the charity?s work and what they can do to help.?
Lives Not Knives will have a stand at the Festival, raising awareness of the support available and breaking down the myths and misunderstandings associated with knife crime. The charity hopes to get businesses involved in career support programmes locally, while future plans include new teacher resource packs on the effects and dangers of knife crime.
Eliza added:
?Our work is all about prevention, to stop people carrying a knife in the first place. It?s important that young people have the facts at an early age, so they can make the right choices. Knife crime can affect anyone, it?s not a gang issue, only 18% of knife crime is perpetrated by gangs. It?s everyone?s issue.?
The Butterfly Effect Festival will take place in Lloyd Park, Croydon, on 28th and 29th July. Ticket sales for Sunday 29th July, purchased via the following link will go to supporting the Lives Not Knives charity https://bit.ly/2InXLkk
