Squaring The Circle

How Sweet Frequencies feels about the importance of including amateur DJ's on the same line-up's as legends.

ARTICLE:
amateur (noun)

  1. 1.
a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid rather than a professional basis.
Here at Sweet Frequencies, we want amateur DJ's to be heard.
We started organising parties for that very reason. We were amateur DJ's. We felt we had something to offer, but couldn't break into the industry, much less get paid for doing so. Putting on our own parties gave us the chance, in a small way, to be heard.
As we have grown as promoters, it has allowed us to book bigger, more recognised artists.
But at the very core of our line-up are the amateurs, the bedroom DJ's and the DJ's playing their very first live gig. These DJs are very carefully chosen. They need to know their craft and equipment, have impeccable taste in music, and know how to rock a dancefloor, but are rarely given or know how to get the opportunity.
We have access to a large pool of this talent from our network of contacts, various DJ schools, and up-and-coming online radio stations. We cycle these through a series of free or low-cost club nights in smaller venues until they have the confidence to be on a lineup in bigger venues with much bigger names and get paid for doing so.
We have the same goal as nearly every other promoter on the planet, which is to drive ticket sales so that our events are successful. This, in turn, leads to more and bigger events, many happy punters with much more exposure for the amateurs. These DJ's often go on to do great things; often hosting and curating their own nights with a similar ethos.
So, in a nutshell, support your local scene and go to the smaller gigs. Don't shy away from going to nights where you don't recognise any of the names on the poster. You will be amazed at the wealth of special talent you will hear.
Peace, Love, and Banging Beats.
