World premiere of Irvine Welsh doc to close Edinburgh Film Festival

Irvine Welsh: Reality Is Not Enough will have its world premiere on the closing night of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival on Wednesday 20th August.

Date published: 3rd Jul 2025

An illuminating portrait of one of Scotland’s favourite writers will premiere on closing night of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) on Wednesday 20th August. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Paul Sng, known for his acclaimed documentaries on the likes of Tish Murtha and Poly Styrene, Irvine Welsh: Reality Is Not Enough will offer a rare glimpse into the Trainspotting author’s mind as he looks back over his treasured career, warts and all.

“Irvine Welsh is at a crossroads. After experiencing the huge success of several film adaptations and six million books sold worldwide, he has become acutely aware of his own mortality.  Now, with his hedonistic days drawing to a close, the outspoken author decides to explore the boundaries of consciousness through a psychedelic DMT trip.”

The film will combine observational footage with readings from his novels narrated by Liam Neeson, Maxine Peak, Nick Cave, Ruth Negga, and Stephen Graham. Edinburgh International Film Festival is set to return for its 78th edition next month, running from Thursday 14th to Wednesday 20th August 2025.

Director Paul Sng remarked, “Irvine Welsh has remained an urgent and compelling voice in literature and film since the day he was first published. It’s been a joy and a pleasure working with one of the great storytellers of our time, and we’re chuffed to launch the film in Edinburgh at this year’s EIFF.”

Welsh himself followed, “When you grow up in a place, you're always kind of rebelling against it slightly. But Edinburgh is part of me and always will be, so I’m absolutely delighted that Reality Is Not Enough will have its World Premiere here".

Following its world premiere, the film will head to UK cinemas in September. Choose EIFF.
