Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events

We bring you all the latest news as the Premier League went to the final day.

Date published: 23rd May 2022

The Premier League came down to the final day and all eyes were on Liverpool and Manchester City as to who would come out on top. City were the favourites as they rarely ever lose games but football has a funny way of being unpredictable. It was a nightmare start for Liverpool against Wolves however as Konate missed a header which left Jiminez free to set up Neto for a tap-in.

Yet the crowd roared Liverpool on and Liverpool were level through Mane after a delightful Thiago assist. News soon broke that Manchester City were losing, meaning that Liverpool just needed one goal to be champions. Liverpool struggled the entire match, clearly overwhelmed by the emotion of the game. When the second half began, City were two goals down thanks to Coutinho, who was doing his old side a favour.

Yet, Manchester City did what Manchester City always do and suddenly raised their game to smash Villa 3-2. By the time Mo Salah and Robertson had scored late on for Liverpool, the league had already been lost. So it was another title for Pep Guardiola's side, their fourth under him and with Liverpool being the only real competitors, it would seem as though they're going to dominate the Premier League for a long time to come.

In terms of the relegation fight, Leeds needed to draw if Burnley were losing and they got exactly what they were needing. Burnley were unable to fend off the resurgent Newcastle who condemned the Lancashire side to the Championship. Leeds got an emotional 2-1 win away at Brentford, with mad scenes coming from the West Yorkshire sides fans in the away end.

Manchester United, undoubtedly the team who have underperformed the most this season lost to Crystal Palace 1-0 to end a poor campaign with a suitably poor performance. Tottenham secured the last Champions League place by smashing Norwich 5-0, Son scoring enough goals to share the golden boot with Salah. Arsenal had to settle for the Europa League but that didn't stop them from rolling over the dreadful Everton side 5-1.

West Ham could have been playing Europa League football but were surprisingly beaten by a brilliant Brighton performance. It was another wild Premier League season with plenty of drama. We're looking forward to the next one already and all eyes will be on Saudi Arabia backed Newcastle in the transfer market to see just how much cash they will spend.
