Gary 'Mani' Mounfield of The Stone Roses dead, aged 63

The Mancunian bassist rose to fame with legendary band The Stone Roses in the ‘80s.

Legendary bassist for The Stone Roses, Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, has been reported dead, aged 63. 

Mani’s death was announced by his brother Greg Mounfield. He posted: “It is with the heaviest hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.”

Hailing from Crumpsall in Manchester, Mani rose to fame with The Stone Roses in the ‘80s. The band is known as one of Manchester's biggest from the Madchester era, releasing anthems such as 'Fool's Gold', 'I Wanna Be Adored' and 'Waterfall'.  

Mani played bass on both of the Stone Roses' albums, performing with the band until they disbanded in 1996. Mani would later go on to join another legendary band, Primal Scream. 

The cause of Mani's death has not yet been publicly announced. 

Mani died almost two years to the day after his wife, Imelda, died of bowel cancer in November 2023. The couple had twin boys, announcing their births in 2013.

Tributes from musicians, entertainers, and fans are flooding in.

Stone Roses bandmate Ian Brown posted a tribute on X, as did The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess.

Rowetta of Manchester band Happy Mondays posted: "Back with your Imelda, Mani. Going to miss you so much. All my love to the boys, the family & all those who knew & loved him".

Liam Gallagher of Oasis posted: "In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani my hero RIP RKID"
