The experimental hip-hop duo announced their return via Instagram, ending months of breakup rumours.

Experimental hip-hop duo Death Grips have officially confirmed they’re back in the studio, working on their first full-length album since 2018’s The Year of the Snitch. The news ends months of speculation about the group’s future following rumours of a split earlier this year.

The announcement came via Instagram, where members MC Ride (Stefan Burnett) and Zach Hill shared images from a recording studio, captioned: “The writing and recording of our next album is underway. We’re looking forward to the new Death Grips record.” The post was signed by Burnett and Hill with no mention of co-founder Andy Morin, leaving fans uncertain about his current involvement.

Back in February, leaked texts from Morin had claimed the group was “over,” prompting a flurry of breakup rumours. Two months later, Death Grips silenced speculation with a statement reading, “Despite rumour and hearsay, we remain active as Death Grips,” again signed only by Burnett and Hill.

The new record will mark the band’s first full project in seven years, following their 2018 release The Year of the Snitch. Since then, they’ve shared the 2019 EP Gmail and the Restraining Orders for Warp Records’ 30th anniversary and toured sporadically, maintaining their status as one of the most unpredictable forces in experimental rap.

First emerging with their 2011 mixtape Exmilitary and breakthrough debut The Money Store, Death Grips became known for fusing aggressive punk energy with chaotic electronic production. Their rebellious streak - including leaking their own 2012 album No Love Deep Web and being dropped by Epic Records as a result - cemented their reputation as one of music’s most uncompromising acts.
