About

On 27th April 1970, David Bowie played a solo acoustic gig at the Poco A Poco club on Manchester Road, Heaton Chapel supported by Barclay James Harvest, High Tide and Purple Gang.

After his sell-out performance, David missed his train back to London and spent the night sleeping on Stockport station.

55 years to the day, The Stockport Music Story have collaborated with Avanti West Coast to install a commemorative plaque to mark this occasion at the side of the Stockport British Rail sign on Grand Central Square (opposite the Sainsbury's Local next to the short stay station car park).

Please join us for a special occasion to unveil the plaque and to meet the Stockport sixth-formers from Stockport Schools' Students' Union who booked David Bowie to play this concert in Stockport.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Plaque Unveiling outside (without booking a ticket) but there is limited seating inside for the talk which is why we need to ticket this part of the event.

After unveiling the plaque, we will convene to the large Waiting Room on Platform 3 of Stockport Station for an 'In Conversation With' our special guests who have a fascinating story to tell. There will be cold refreshments and for this part you need to have a ticket due to capacity.

At our talk you can find out why these sixth-formers were in the position to organise this iconic gig, how they made it happen and their memories of that amazing night.

We will be meeting underneath the Stockport sign on the station wall, adjacent to the short stay station car park and a short distance from the NCP car park at 11, Railway Road.

Seats for this free event are limited due to space in the conference room so please can you only book as many tickets as you need.

We will also be selling a limited edition commemorative art print by Viv Lally for a special price.

Huge thanks to Avanti West Coast, Stockport Council and the UK Shared Prosperity fund for making this possible. Massive thanks also to David Maynard for giving us permission to share the amazing never seen before images of the concert posters.
