Review of Graham Nash - An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories

Ps. Why no rhythm section? The seats weren't cheap, especially V. I. P. seating. My heart sank when I took my seat and saw there was no drum kit. Surely he could have hired a proficient drummer and bassist at least, to fill out the sound and make for a more complete musical experience. Penny pinching Graham?

Review of Graham Nash - An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories

To qualify earlier my comments re. Tony Young: I posted 3 times as I understood my reiews hadn't got through.
I apologise to Graham Nash as my comments were harsh bordering on hostile, and on reflection out of order. My criticism, was hardly constructive. I would like to put that right.
My ticket was bought for me as a surprise present by someone who has known me long enough, to be aware of my historical appreciation of CSNY. Graham Nash stated early in the show that Stills was a musical genius. I agree. I saw his band (after CSNY), Manassas, in Manchester in '73 and was blown away by them. I also saw Stills with a four piece band in a small theatre some 10 years ago and he was a shambles, far worse than Nash the other night. I loved Nash' s first solo album 'Songs for beginners' and I must say to his credit, that I enjoyed his rendition in Southport of 'I used to be a king', one of my all time favourite songs.
I just felt short changed. (Ironic I know, as I hadn't paid for my ticket!) As far as I know his only solo album, since 'Songs for beginners', came recently in 2016 and to be honest the content is instantly forgettable.
His obvious continuing affection for Joni Mitchell was touching. Her musical output and quality shades his a million times over.
You are right Tony, I shouldn't have gone. I should have learned my lesson from the Stills show 10 years ago and simply cherished the memory of my musical heroes (Nash included) creating wonderful music in a golden age of hope, rebellion, protest and love. It would seem that 'Flower Power' has remained firmly in the hands of 'Interflora'.

We knew what to expect. Graham Nash delivered. A very enjoyable concert, great venue. The setlist was superb, as was the musicianship. It was good seeing Graham Nash in an intimate venue, compared to Manchester Arena where we have seen him many times with Stills and Crosby. Prices were good.

PS Phil Lewis what did you expect (3 attempt at posting noted!). If you don't want Nash to play his best songs then don't go!

Awful. Liked his stuff in early 70s. Must be doing this to pay for his new young wife. Nostalgic twaddle. Exposed him as the weakest link in CSNY. Best audience reaction, 'Love the one your with'. (a Steve's tills song!)
You were a very lucky Hollie indeed to get the gig Graham. Your voice is still OK. Bit like a cross between Gilbert O'sullivan and George Formby these days. Time to call it a day mate.

The last time I saw Graham Nash in the flesh, he shared the stage at Wembley Stadium with Csny. It was Sept. 14th 1974. On the Bill were Joni Mitchell with Tom Scott's L. A. Express and The Band. It was the highlight of my musical life. Sadly, Nash's solo show in Southport the other night was one of the low points. The passage of time has cruelly exposed his limitations as a songwriter. The best audience reaction of the night was for 'Love the one you're with'. Ironically a Stephen Stills song. The whole show relied on nostalgia, something that Max Bygrave cornered the market for years ago. Sadly, Graham Nash has neither the panache nor personality to carry such a venture. His voice sounded OK. His high harmony the reason for him getting the gig with Stills and Crosby all those years ago. Leading me to conclude that he was a very lucky Hollie indeed, for being in the right place at the right time.
I would have preferred to have been anywhere rather than Southport the other night.

I have been a fan of Graham for almost 50 years and always enjoy watching him perform, especially since he went 28 years between UK tours with one or more of his old compadres in CSNY. This was another top quality performance - it is always good to hear his classic songs and his voice stands up remarkably well to the advances of time. But, 12 months after seeing him on his previous tour just 20 miles away in Liverpool, I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed that this show was rather too similar to that earlier one. There were a couple of welcome changes to the setlist, with Pre-Road Downs and Right Between the Eyes included, but the format of the gig was practically identical to that in 2018. If it was the same tour and I had gone twice, I couldn't quibble but, for a new tour so soon afterwards and so close geographically to where he visited last time, I had hoped he might shake up the content a little. The anecdotes between songs were practically word for word the same and what came as pleasant surprises a year ago, such as covers of The Beatles' A Day In The Life and Buddy Holly's Everyday, paled a little on repeat. The music, with Graham backed by Shayne Fontayne on guitar and Todd Caldwell on keyboards, was absolutely top notch, but Graham's back catalogue is such that I wish he could include a little more variety and perhaps cut down on the cover versions a little.

Graeme Nash and his group were very good .Sadly his voice is not as strong as it was, but he is 77 .The musicianship.was excellent as was the sound quality.Graeme was very interesting with his stories and seemed very amicable. The only downside was people using their mobiles to take videos this was distracting and caused some friction. The price of the confectionery and the drinks was far to expensive. But the show was great even my wife enjoyed it and she is not a fan.
