Emma by Jane Austen (adapted by Michael Bloom) on Wednesday 11th - Saturday 14th September 2019
The course of true love never did run smooth, and never more so than in Highbury when Emma is making the matches and Midland Players present Jane Austen’s Emma!
A tale of matchmaking, meddling and marriage, of youthful hubris and the perils of misconstrued romance!
This highly theatrical adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s greatest novels tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, ‘handsome, clever and rich’, and the other families in and around the village of Highbury.
Pledging never herself to marry, the mischievous Emma is nevertheless the 'matchmaker of Highbury.' Emma sets about making matches among her friends and relations, oblivious, and often surprised about, the risks of meddling in other people’s lives.
‘Emma’ combines Austen’s lively comedy of manners with ageless stories of love - secret, unrequited and fulfilled - and beautiful Regency-Georgian fashion and etiquette.
At just over 200- years old, Emma retains a modern air - the need to be part of an ‘in crowd’, to find your perfect mate, and the tension between female independence and masculinity, pairing classic period stylings with modern relevance.
