Music in the Round 2017 Festival Concert - Out of Time & Place on Thursday 11th May 2017

ENSEMBLE 360 and LYDIA KAVINA on Theremin present: PROKOFIEV Quintet Op.39 for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass, MARTINU Fantasia for theremin, oboe, string quartet and piano, SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No.8 in C minor Op.110, EISLER Septet No.1 Variations on American Children’s Songs. These pieces all have a remarkable story. Prokofiev’s Quintet, written in France, was a complete ballet that never materialised and Martinu’s Fantasia was written in the USA during the composer’s wartime exile. Shostakovich’s deeply moving eight Quartet was written in Dresden, and Hanns Eisler took refuge in East Berlin having been expelled from the USA in the McCarthy purges…despite the protests of Chaplin, Thomas Mann, Einstein, Picasso, Matisse, Copland and Cocteau! This concert is an intriguing kaleidoscope of mid-20th century sounds. This concert will also be recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 3. There will be free to concert ticket holders, pre-concert talk in the studio at 5,45pm, when Lydia, one of the world's leading Theremin players, introduces one of the world's first electronic musical instruments, the innovative instrument spawned evocative music for countless 1950's sci-fi movies and opened up a new world of experimental classical music. Lydia was taught from the age of 9, by the inventor himself, scientist and spy, Leon Theremin. Between the end of the talk and the concert have s go at playing it yourself.
