Burlesque Workshops on Tuesday 12th November 2019

What is it?

Burlesque is a time honoured art form, a sexually expressive form of entertainment that has its roots far back in British theatre. Burlesque is striptease with the emphasis on the tease. A classy, sexy theatrical performance done with a tongue in cheek humour and a twinkle in the eye. Burlesque is normally done playing homage to its more recent historical roots; think vintage glamour, feathers, corsets, seamed stockings and nipple tassels.

However, burlesque can and does go much deeper and further back in history than just strip-tease and so can provide much inspiration for the dance...

Why should you do it?

Here are just some of the benefits of taking a burlesque workshop:

  • *Great for building self-confidence as you learn new skills, along with new ways of moving and being in your body;

  • *The theatrical, tongue-in-cheek element of burlesque can bring out different parts of your persona to explore and play with that you maybe didn’t know you had; sassy, fierce, empowered, sexy, shy, sweet, cheeky, silly, dramatic, or even a little bit dark and twisted – you get to choose;

  • *Meeting every week allows you to get to know each other, to feel safe and supported while you explore different parts of yourself without judgment, and possibly make some lasting friendships along the way;

  • *Perhaps you want to perform or you’re already a performer – burlesque can be a great addition to your performance toolkit, and because it’s so versatile it can also work the other way with you bringing your own unique skills and style to create your own flavour of burlesque;

  • *The men and women you dance with are inspiring and supportive;

  • *Burlesque can be empowering and fun!

Who is it for?

Anyone with a body! No matter what your shape, size, age, gender, origin, ability, experience level – if you are curious about burlesque, then burlesque is for you! Everyone is welcome.

All you need to take part is a willingness to move and to be curious. None of the moves in the classes are particularly difficult so anyone can pick them up, but what is really great about them, is that you have space to explore different styles and develop a way of moving that feels natural and good for you, and with confidence.

No one is asked to do anything that they are not comfortable with and moves can be adapted to suit different abilities.

What will a workshop cover?

Burlesque: Fundamentals (6 Consecutive Weeks)

The ‘Burlesque: Fundamentals’ workshop has been designed to be suitable for everyone from absolute beginners with no experience or coordination what so ever, to those who are more experienced. Each week, you will be introduced to a different style of burlesque and a fun and simple routine that you can take away with you to practice or add your own moves to.

Here are some of the things we will cover:

  • *An introduction to a number of different styles of burlesque and the movements, walks, poses, and dance associated with that style;

  • *An introduction to some props related to the style of burlesque introduced, and their use (e.g., gloves, fans, feather boas, nipple tassels, Chinese silk scarves, etc.);

  • *A short, simple choreographed routine with space to explore your own additions to the routine;

  • *An opportunity to ‘perform’ a short routine to the rest of the class in small groups (optional).

Burlesque: Storytelling (6 Consecutive Weeks)

This workshop is a little more advanced than ‘Burlesque: Fundamentals’ in that it requires the student to take more of a lead in their own learning and development. Over the 6 weeks you will be guided and coached in to exploring different aspects of storytelling. There is less emphasis on following set steps and choreography in this workshop and more space for you to explore your own style of storytelling. The workshop culminates in a solo performance to the rest of the group and each week will build towards this allowing you to develop a portfolio of ideas. Regardless of whether you are looking to perform or not, this workshop can help to develop confidence and skills in many ways.

Previous movement experience is required, or exposure to at least one style of dance that you wish to build upon for your story-telling base. If you feel you could benefit from learning more about different styles of dance then the ‘Burlesque: Fundamentals’ workshop is a good place to start.

Over the 6-weeks we will cover the following:

  • *The key elements of theatrical storytelling;

  • *Developing your own style and theme;

  • *A deeper look at facial expressions, gestures, and the use of the body in storytelling;

  • *Exploring costume and props;

  • *Use of space, personal space, stage, audience, presence;

  • *The course culminates in a solo performance to the rest of the group.

Burlesque: Storytelling (INTENSIVE 1 DAY WORKSHOP)

This is an intensive 1-day version of the 6-week Burlesque: Storytelling workshop, especially designed for those of you who do not have time during the week and cannot commit to a whole 6 weeks. The workshop is practical and hands on and you will leave with a portfolio of ideas towards your own performance. Due to the intensive nature of the workshop, it is recommended to have taken the 'Burlesque: Fundamentals' workshop or to have had some burlesque classes before, however this is not compulsory. If you are in doubt or have any questions please do get in touch.

Please also note that this workshop will be taking place at a different venue: Watlington House Hall, Reading. Further details below.

About your instructor:

Irem Luqman

Irem has been teaching many styles of dance, including Bollywood, pole fitness and burlesque for well over 15 years. She formed Reading’s much loved burlesque performance group, the Scarlet Vixens, in 2012 in order to give women and men a platform upon which to express themselves through dance and story telling.

A trained dance movement psychotherapist, NLP practitioner, and conscious movement teacher, Irem brings all of this knowledge combined with her background and experience in order to help others to find their ‘voice’ through dance. She is passionate about providing a safe, nurturing, supportive, and non-judgmental space in which people are welcome to explore all aspects of themselves.

Irem loves how burlesque boosts body confidence and also gives women and men the freedom to explore different sides of their personality, and the highlight of her job is seeing her students grow in confidence from week to week and watching them unleash their fierceness in a way they didn’t even know they could!
